What is happening?

On 24 September, a fire affected two tourist units at Letaba Rest Camp. SANParks reported that staff and rangers contained it, that no injuries or fatalities were reported, and that the camp's other listed facilities remained operational. SANParks ↗

Malelane Gate was scheduled to close temporarily from 08:00 on 22 September because of a planned march. SANParks advised guests, staff and suppliers to use alternative gates where possible. SANParks ↗

Two further developments warrant attention. Preliminary fuel data reported on 25 September pointed to a possible October increase of roughly R2.82–R3.00 per litre for petrol and R2.67–R3.07 for diesel, depending on grade. Separately, a Government Gazette notice extended the deadline for comments on the draft Revised Electricity Pricing Policy and Electricity Sector Market Transformation Position Paper to 28 October 2026. What do we know—and what don't we know?

SANParks says the cause of the Letaba fire remains under investigation. Its statement does not establish which controls prevented the fire from spreading, so the incident should not be used as proof that any particular building feature or response measure succeeded.

The Malelane notice establishes the planned closure and the need for alternative arrangements; it does not establish how long access was disrupted. The fuel figures are a forecast, not the announced October prices. The electricity notice extends a consultation period; it does not bring new tariffs into force.

Why does it matter?

For a lodge, fire planning reaches beyond extinguishers. It includes how someone raises the alarm, accounts for guests, guides responders to individual units and decides which parts of the property can continue operating safely. A gate closure adds another dimension: an alternative route may be needed for employees, deliveries, guests and emergency response.

Fuel exposure is more specific than a headline price. It depends on a property's actual generator use, transport and delivery patterns. Electricity policy could matter to refrigeration, pumping and accommodation operations, but its effect on a particular site cannot be calculated from a consultation notice alone.

How can Black Sable support?

Black Sable Risk can bring these questions into one property record: map accommodation units and emergency access; document alarm, evacuation and response arrangements; identify critical routes and services; and record the people responsible for each action. For fuel and electricity exposure, we can establish the site's current consumption and operating arrangements so that later changes can be assessed against evidence.

The purpose is to make the property, its people and its operating dependencies visible before an incident tests them.
